Transgender in Japan

I'm teaching a class in a university
on cultural anthropology of gender/sexuality.
Today I told about transgenderism in Japan,
referring to a book written by Junko Mitsuhashi
who is famous as a cross-dresser and researcher.

The book, "Cross-dressing to Women and Japan",
covers historical cases of cross-dressing widely
and her own experience as a cross-dresser is
very interesting.

However I thought her perspective on cultures
and on changes of social norms is too simplistic.
She indicates that the Japan culture
which was tolerant of cross-dressing and homosexuality
till the Edo Era has been changed by western psychiatry
based on christianity.

I think that cultures always has conflicting norms
and values. The conflict is a base of social changes.
Edo era of Japan was not exception.
Before psychiatry came into Japan,
there had already been negative attitude to those,
even though it was not dominant.

I'd like to write more about my point of view on cultures
another time...
